Project Statement

Our two pieces work together to show the duality of how the pandemic affects thousands of people regardless of whether they work to stay safe or not and how frustrating it is when others do not do the same. By creating a composition entirely out of yarn I created a feeling of warmth but also slight suffocation and itchiness. The snakes on the crochet balaclava represent disease and the harm that is spread through people who do not adhere to guidelines and simply think of themselves, which is reflected on the ‘skin’ of the balaclava. When all seems lost a glimmering hope during this time of death and disease are the health-care workers who sacrifice their lives to save many more. They work to eradicate these snakes of disease and death and do so with blue surgical gloves which have become a symbol of healing and medicine. And while the snakes on the crochet balaclava represent disease the snakes on the surgical gloves represent the doctors and nurses that are working everyday to save lives. The symbols on the gloves are reminiscent of the Rod of Asclepius, the Greek god of healing and medicine.
