Project Statement

I was inspired by the quote: “In a ball of yarn is the potential to make a dream that you have come true.” I wanted to create a box that would explode with potential and open a new world to Annie. When I met up with Annie Waugh I asked her about her hobbies and things she would want. She told me she likes making collages, crazy colors, dressing up and that she wanted to be more organized, as well as learn a new hobby. Since she loves creating collages I figured I could use freeform crochet to make the perfect collage for her. Elements of chaos and randomness all mashed together into a cohesive bag design to create a bag unlike any other. I also created multi-colored flying butterfly mechanisms to add to the unassuming, white, exploding box that I created so that when Annie opened the plain box she would reveal a world made of bright colors and the potential to make a dream that she had come true. I wrapped the box with an unraveling crocheted ribbon made of yarn in her favorite color, green, that would eventually become a bracelet that she would make with the included crochet hook inside of the box. I taught her how to crochet a bracelet for her very first crochet project. I knew it would be a good introduction to crochet and I hope that it sparks her interest in crochet and motivates her to continue learning and pursuing this new hobby.
